A registered agent is an individual or a business designed to receive service of process (SOP) when a business entity (such as a corporation or LLC) is a party in a legal action such as a lawsuit or summons.
Having a registered agent and a registered address within the state where you formed your company is a requirement when creating a new business. Therefore, if a company expands its business to another state, it needs an agent in that state as well. Failure to obtain one will result in legal issues as well as bad reputation for the company.
An agent can be an individual member of the company, but usually it is from a third party such as the company’s lawyer or another service company.
